Work begins on leaky roof at Lucea Fire station

BY ANTHONY LEWIS Observer West writer

LUCEA, Hanover - SOME $500,000 is being spent by the Department of Local Government to address the leaky concrete roof which houses the Lucea Fire Station in Hanover.

District Officer assigned to the Hanover Fire Department Courtney Nembhard, in a recent report to the Hanover Parish Council, had pointed out that the dormitory area of the station is mostly affected whenever there is heavy rainfall.

"In the rainy season, we have a terrible leaking roof especially in the fire fighters dormitory where we have to remove all of those beds and put them in the recreational hall so that they (firefighters) can rest whenever we have our down time," Nembhard said.

He suggested, however, that the $500,000 allocated would not be sufficient to complete the rehabilitation of the roof.

"We were informed that there is a sum of money that was granted to do some repairs. When we did some assessment along with Mr (Xavier) Monroe (of the Hanover Parish Council), we recognised that the money is probably about 75 per cent of the total cost that is needed for the repairs, so we will have to do only a part of the work," Nembhard explained.

The Lucea Fire Station was refurbished, expanded and handed over to the department in November of 2008. The department, however, has claimed that it started experiencing problems with the roof a year later.
