In Mandarin, the word 'hee' means happy and lucky and 'cha' means tea. Together they form an interesting name combo — Heecha — for a milk and iced tea store located beside General Food Supermarket in Liguanea Plaza. It's also making its debut in Jamaica.

Be prepared, like Thursday Food, to be wowed by the extensive iced and milk tea offerings. To be clear, the milk teas served at Heecha are made from mountain tea plants imported either from Taiwan or other premier tea-producing countries. The milk is derived from the plants too.

The six week-old establishment [it opened on December 11, 2017] has already found favour with many, with the Royal Bubble Milk Tea, the Fresh Honey Lemon Iced Tea and the Egg Waffle ice cream establishing themselves as runaway favourites.

The owner, Piya Chin, opined that the interest especially for the Royal Bubble Milk Tea comes from its history and exotic foreign aspect.

“Shakes like the Royal Bubble Milk Tea are very popular everywhere and have a very long history, too. You can find it in places like the US and Canada and everyone likes it because it's different,” Chin explained.

“Everything is good here, no joking. Our method is simply this: 'if it's not good, we're not selling' and that seems to work for us,” she added.

Just about anything for those with a sweet, but not too sweet, tooth can be found at Heecha, from the egg waffle ice creams with toppings that go on without measure, to the fresh milk and iced tea shakes — of course, the Royal Bubble Milk Tea — to the Lucky Sambo, Taro, Grass Jelly Fresh or the Chocolate QQ Milk teas, or the fresh fruit iced teas ranging from Peach Green Tea with QQ Jelly, to the Passion, Pineapple or Lychee Green teas. Shakes like Purple Sweet Potato and Taro (add sogo) or Hot grem are also interesting milkshakes, of course, creamy and certainly new to Jamaica.

Though the menu can be daunting, the selection process is quite simple: select your desired beverage, the size, sugar, ice content and toppings, and voila! The perfect Asian milk/iced tea.

Chin is already eyeing expansion. For her and her team of four, the hope is to have Heecha in every parish. Let the countdown begin!
