Meet 17-year-old twins Romario and Romio Brown of Federal United FC. Enrolled at the Innswood High School, the boys are oozing with confidence to make a great impression on next season's Manning Cup schoolboy football competition. The youngsters spoke intelligently with TEENage about their love for the sport, and the amusement that gives them the drive to continue.
TEENage: How did you get involved with the sport?
Twins: Well, we got involved through our mother, she is a great supporter of the game. Additionally, when we see others play and do well, we get energised to get out there and do the same thing.
TEENage: What do you remember of your debut game?
Romario: It was a game against Windsor Lions. We were playing for Federal Under-15 team at that time. My brother scored a brilliant free-kick to level the match 1-1. We went 2-1 up, but Romio turns from hero to villain, because he ended up scoring an own goal. Nonetheless, we enjoyed that game, even with a 2-2 scoreline, which was not what we wanted.
TEENage: What thrills you about the sport?
Romio: The excitement, the joy, and just the overall feeling of been a part of the sport, just continues to amuse me.
Romario: I really don't like losing. So the winning aspect of the game keeps me focused and interested.
TEENage: Where do you see yourself in a couple of years?
Romario: Well, I think that the sky is the limit. I would love to complete my CSEC exams, fulfilling my dreams of a tertiary education while being a semi-pro footballer.
Romio: I see myself in a couple of years studying to become an architect. Although I would like to become a professional player, I think its wise to have a 'Plan B' for your future.
TEENage: Use three words to describe yourself?
Romario: I could speak for both of us. We are confident, hard-working, and progressive.
TEENage: How do you prepare for a game?
Romio: Our preparations are similar, I think if not the same. We always try to keep confident. I think our meditation also help us to make key decisions regarding what we would want to achieve out of the game.
TEENage: Who is your favourite professional player? And why?
Romio: Lionel Messi, of course. I really like the way how he controls the ball at his feet, even in difficult positions.
Romario: For me it's Drogba, his execution in front of goal is superb.
TEENage: Are there any individuals who influence your careers?
Romio: Definitely yes! he goes by the name of Mr Thomas, he is the current football coach at Innswood High. He does influence our careers.
Romario: Although my brother mentioned Mr Thomas, there are also elders at the Federal United FC Club, who always inspires us to be discipline, and pay special attention to our future. So positive influences are not limited on our path.
TEENage: What would be your few words for aspiring players like yourself?
Romio: Never give up. Believe in God, and be humble.
Romario: Failure brings success, so never be afraid to make mistakes. I guarantee that if you keep practising, you will become perfect.
