RBC donates $5M to UWI

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

AS part of RBC's Community Blueprint initiative, RBC Royal Bank (Jamaica) Limited presented the University of the West Indies (UWI) with a cheque for $5 million.

Barrington Watson, Market Head, Business Banking, RBC Jamaica, said the donation reaffirmed the bank's commitment to developing the nation's youth.

"Our contribution signals our continued dedication to creating stronger, sustainable communities where we live and work. By investing in education, not only are we investing in the future of Jamaica but the entire Caribbean region by extension."

The presentation is a continuation of the commitment to the RBC/UWI scholarship fund announced in 2008. The relationship was formalised with a commitment of $40M to fund scholarships for eligible students who are economically challenged. The programme also provides mentors who offer career guidance to the scholars.

"This donation comes at a time when many young people in Jamaica and the region are clamouring for a higher education, but lack the funds necessary to achieve their dreams. It is a stirring testimony to corporate responsibility exemplified by RBC," stated E Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies.

Under the RBC Community Blueprint, the bank focuses its community investments in six areas — arts & culture, sports, education, health, social services and the environment, while continuing support of a wider range of causes.
