1. In Jamaica 1965, Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jnr, visited Jamaica and delivered the valedictory sermon at the University of the West Indies in June. He was presented with the Keys to the City of Kingston the following day.

2. Jamaica first became a member of the UN Human Rights Commission in January.

3. Sir Alexander Bustamante stepped back from politics due to illness, leaving Sir Donald Sangster as acting prime Minister of Jamaica.

4. The first prime minister of Canada, Lester Pearson, discussed 'shared concerns with the acting prime minister Sir Donald Sangster after arriving in November.

5. The town of Morant Bay was raised to mayoral status in honour of National Hero Paul Bogle and the 1865 rebellion.

6. Former Prime Minister Edward Seaga married Marie 'Mitsy' Constantine in this year.

7. The National Volunteers Organisation was founded, marking the start of the first national institution that directly and mainly facilitated community service.

8. A monument honouring George William Gordon was erected, in acknowledgement of the 1865 centenary celebrations, on the grounds of the National Shrine, which is now known as National Heroes Park.

9. Former Jamaican football captain, who scored Jamaica's first goal at the 1998 World Cup, Robbie Earle, was born on January 27, 1965.

10. The 50-year anniversary of the first contingent of Jamaicans to join in World War I was commemorated in this year.
