No stranger to marketing and promotions, Andre Brown, the founder and owner of Social Butterfliez Entertainment Group Ltd in Montego Bay, began his corporate career in the second city in June 2008 as the assistant marketing and promotions manager for all Margaritaville Caribbean's properties. He eventually became their programmes and promotions manager and today he is the night club operations manager for Margaritaville Montego Bay, even as he runs his own company.

Brown's reputation in Montego Bay's entertainment circles comes from more than just his association with Margaritaville, however. Over the past 15 years he has become a recognised name in promotions, creating popular and long-running party series such as 'Shorts Circuit', which was the first promotion to bring American rapper Rick Ross to Jamaica for an event, and 'High Noon' — a daytime promotion that became a favourite playground for young Montegonian partygoers.

Brown also works with Dream Weekend and has been a director of BritJam Spring Break Music Festival, a well known annual spring break event in western Jamaica, since its inception in 2010.

Through his work in promotions with sponsors, brands, beverage companies, and other promoters from around Jamaica, Brown was often asked to assist with marketing-related tasks in Montego Bay that people in these businesses could not handle themselves.

“I realised there was a gap in Montego Bay for a focused and dedicated marketing company,” he explained. “More and more brands in Kingston wanted a company in Montego Bay that they could really lean on to be a full-service marketing solution — so they wouldn't need to run to three, four or five different places to get one task done.

“They needed an all-in-one in-house solution that could give them the confidence they needed that their brand is going to be represented, marketed, and promoted to a very high level by trained and professional individuals in Mobay,” he continued. “It was like 'oh we need brand ambassadors and we need you to do this and do that', so I thought Montego Bay really needed a full-service solution that can cater to different needs.”

And so Social Butterfliez Entertainment Group Ltd was founded in October of 2017. The members of Brown's management team are Carlisa Dacosta, CEO, and Operations Manager Aldhane Falconer. All other staff members are contracted for particular jobs or tasks.

The company provides trained brand ambassadors to support brands in sales, marketing ,and promotional capacities.

“For example, a brand may approach us to do sales in a local supermarket or other retail outlets, and we will put together a plan for individuals trained in sales and customer service to go out there and represent your brand to achieve your targets,” Brown elaborates. “For some it is sales, for some it is creating awareness, and for others it is general marketing.”

Social media management, public relations, advertising, event management, bar management, and bottle service at events are included in the company's offerings.

“We also offer project management services,” Brown revealed. “For example, we manage an on-trade and promotions campaign for the Wholesale Seafood brand right across Jamaica.”

In addition, Social Butterfliez Entertainment Group acts as a talent agency, providing hosts for events as well as models for advertisements, fashion shows and photo shoots.

“We've done several international and local music videos utilising our male and female models,” Brown stated.

At its inception the company provided a variety of services, but not as many as it currently does. The growth in its offerings reflects the confidence of its clients, who demanded more and more as time went by.

“The business started to grow tentacles because different needs arose and different things started to pop up that we are good at,” reflected Brown. “The quality that we brought to the table, and just the attention to detail and the level of service we were offering clients caused word of mouth to get out that there was a company in Mobay handling varying aspects of marketing and promotion — so things began to take off.”

In October of 2017, Social Butterfliez Entertainment Group started with three clients. Almost two years later, Brown says they have moulded 10 solid corporate partnerships with companies around Jamaica, as well as working relationships with promoters and other business operators in and around Montego Bay.

Clients the company has worked with in different capacities include Rainforest Seafoods, Red Stripe, Supreme Ventures, Caribbean Airlines, Island Strains Herb House, Dream Entertainment, Main Event, Romeich Entertainment and Wray and Nephew, to name a few.

The company has also been involved with a number of events over the past two years in western Jamaica.

“The Wild Bunch all-white party and the Charley's JB 'Out A West' concert are two examples of the kinds of events we have done,” Brown said. “The company also now handles my events that have run for many years — Shorts Circuit and High Noon.”

Looking to the future, the entrepreneur and promoter would like to see the company's tentacles that he spoke about reach outside Jamaica.

“I want our brand to be represented internationally in the Diaspora, because we believe that is a target market of ours,” he stated. “We'd like to be the number one go-to source for the types of services we offer, and eventually our goal is to go public.”

But his vision for the future, more importantly, involves developing talent from his native Montego Bay and western Jamaica. Brown has worked with young brand ambassadors, creative specialists, models, social media managers, and other professionals from the island's second city and its environs, and he wants to see them realise their full potential to pursue what they are good at — representing the region as successful business people.

“If there is someone in this region who has a talent for marketing, we want to develop that person,” he asserted. “If there is a model that needs to be seen, we want to put that model to the forefront. We want to be the ones that identify western talent and introduce them to the world.”
