Dear Orchid Doc:

I have my sun orchids on logs and have noticed the following:

1. The bark of the log dries and falls off with the roots of the orchids attached.

2. The wood itself rots and decays. How do I get another log attached without interrupting the plants too much?

3. The Vandas have outgrown the logs and are starting to bow under the pressure.
Thanking you in advance.

P Fruze

Dear P Fruze,

To address your first two concerns; cut the roots from the old log and reattach to the new one or tie the new
log to the older one behind it. The older one will hopefully totally decay.

To solve the issue of the bark drying and falling off with the roots, strip the log before you start to plant on
to the log, it is also easier to strip the log when they are green.

Dear Orchid Doc:

My Cattleya orchids are full underleaf with white stuff.

I have been to two stores but they don't seem to be very knowledgeable about the chemicals required. I've enclosed a leaf for your perusal. Please advise what I am to spray the plants with. I'm afraid it will take up all my plants.

Thanking you in advance.

A concerned neighbour

Dear Concerned Neighbour:

Having examined the leaf, I must say that I have never come across any orchids with mealybug, at least not the pink ones. I am recommending Caprid.

Keep me posted about the results.
