The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has signed on as a major sponsor of the Social Development Commission's (SDC) 2018 National Community Cricket Competition with a contribution of $3 million.

The sporting extravaganza will involve over 2,500 players on 244 teams from 358 communities across the island. The action will start on April 29 and the competition is scheduled to run until the end of August.

The contest will start with parish rounds featuring 16 teams in each parish facing off in round-robin and knock-out competitions which are scheduled to end in June. From there, the parish champions will compete in the national phase of the competition culminating with the national finals scheduled for August 26 at the Noranda Bauxite Sports Club in St Ann.

The national champions will win $1.2 million while the second and third place teams are slated to receive $600,000 and $300,000, respectively. At least 15 per cent of the prize money will go towards a community development initiative. Also, the top three teams in each parish should receive $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000, respectively.

Chairman of the PCJ, Russell Hadeed said, “The PCJ supports sports and community development through our Corporate Social Responsibility programmes and an initiative like the SDC's National Community Cricket Competition allows us to contribute to both of these areas with a single donation.

“We are particularly excited about the national reach of this competition because thousands of citizens and hundreds of communities across the country will benefit tangibly and get to enjoy some good cricket,” he added.

Chairman of the SDC, Prudence Kidd-Deans said, “It would be impossible to stage a competition like this without corporate support and we thank the PCJ for coming on board to make our 2018 Community Cricket Competition a reality and we're inviting other corporate sponsors to get involved and make a meaningful contribution to sports at the community level.”
