JAMAICA 'A' team captured the girls' Under-13 team title at the 2017 Caribbean Region Table Tennis Championships played at the National Arena yesterday.

The Jamaicans defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 in their final match in their round-robin team event competition. They finished with maximum eight points.

The home team had defeated Jamaica 'B' 3-2; the highly touted Dominican Republic 3-2; and the combined Guyana/St Vincent and the Grenadines unit 3-0.

Simon Tomlinson, coach of the Jamaica 'A' team, said he was very elated with the victory, and he was just as quick to lavish praise on his players.

“The competition was not easy as some of the matches were pretty close. Every match was tough, but the players stood to the task,” Tomlinson said.

He added that the girls will now look forward in the singles competition, and that all the players have a very good chance of winning.

Meanwhile, Jamaica 'A' boys' Under-13 team was beaten 3-1 by Trinidad and Tobago in their semi-final. The Trinidadians were set to face the Dominican Republic, who had beaten Guyana 3-0 in the other semi-final, in the final last night.

The Jamaicans had beaten St Lucia 3-0, St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0, while losing to Guyana 0-3 for second place in Group Two with four points behind Guyana, who finished with six points.

Trinidad and Tobago had won Group One with six points, while the Dominican Republic finished second with five points.

There was a second team title for Jamaica last night when the Under-11 girls' 'A' team defeated the Jamaica 'B' team 3-0. They were the only participating teams in the competition.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica boys' Under-11 'A' team was also well on its way to clinching victory in that competition. They were locked at 1-1 against Trinidad and Tobago at press time last night, with the Jamaicans needing victory to secure the title.

The individual events — singles, doubles and mixed doubles will begin today starting at 9:00 am.
