TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United (MBU) midfielder Ronaldo Rodney is confident that the former champions will make it to the top six of the Red Stripe Premier League and secure a play-off spot.

After rescuing the team with a second-half goal in their 1-1 draw against defending champions Arnett Gardens on Sunday at WesPow Park, Rodney told the Jamaica Observer he was not sweating over his team's chances of making it to the play-offs for a fifth-straight season.

“We are pretty confident that we will get to the play-offs,” he said. “We made it to three straight finals so we know our abilities, but there is still room for improvements.”

MBU are unbeaten in their last four games, three wins and a draw, but slipped out of the top six to seventh place on 41 points three points outside of a top four spot.

The two-time champions will play Waterhouse FC today in a game that could help decide their fate, but Rodney said they were confident they would be able to step up.

The lanky midfielder has scored four goals, all in crucial, games and at crucial times, since rejoining the team late in the second round; including goals in their 2-2 draw at home against Waterhouse, in their come-from-behind win over Sandals South Coast, and last weekend against 10-man Arnett Gardens.

With top scorer Dino Williams attracting extra defensive attention from their opponents, at times double-teams, Rodney and Lesly St Fleur have benefitted and have combined for eight goals since their run at a top-six position picked up pace in January.

Rodney, who was a key part of the team when they made it to three straight finals, winning two, said he joined the team late as he had some things to deal with, but has fitted in well since his return.

“My game has improved since I came back,” he said. “It was easy to see that the team needed help and I had to come in and do my part.

“I bring a lot of movement and goalscoring, plus I help move the team forward,” he said.
