AFTER brushing aside St Jago High last Saturday to assume leadership of Zone D, Denham Town High spanked hapless Tivoli Gardens High 5-1 to remain ahead in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup schoolboy football competition at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday.

All six goals were scored in the second half with the chief protagonist being Shemar Thompson with a hat-trick in minutes 60, 74 and 80. Other goals came from Donald Walters in the 71st minute and second-half substitute Patrick James in the 90th.

Nathan Mahoney opened the scoring in the 58th for Tivoli Gardens.

Denham Town, who have already qualified for round two, moved their points tally to 23 with St Jago also moving into the second round on 22 points after tagging Bridgeport High 1-0.

“We have always strived to improve the forward thrust of our game and Tivoli Gardens provided a good opportunity to do so with five goals. Nevertheless, we had to recover from a goal down to get the job done,” Said Omar Edwards, coach of Denham Town High.

He added: “Despite already out of the competition Tivoli came out fighting, as they did not want their neighbours to beat them. So we can say that we really had to fight to win the game. There are some other areas of our play that we got in some useful practice for succeeding games.”

Counterpart Tommy Ricketts outlined that he did not think he got the right support for the season. “Watching the way in which the young players applied themselves I saw enough in this youthful squad to perform much better next season with better assistance.”

Ricketts also drew attention to the fact that he had to play the first five matches of the season with a squad of only 13 players and that “seemed to have impacted negatively on our entire season getting off to a better start than we did”.
