DENBIGH High defeated arch-rivals Holmwood Technical to capture the 2018 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Rural High Schools Junior and Senior netball finals played at the Manchester High School last Wednesday.

However, the Clarendon-based aggregation lost the All-Island Championships playoffs in both sections to Urban double champions Gaynstead High on Friday at the Leila Robinson Courts.

It was the second time Denbigh were capturing the Junior and Senior titles, having done so in 2003 against Edwin Allen High.

The Junior final produced a nail-biting finish with Denbigh clipping Holmwood in a low-scoring 18-17. The scores were locked at 15 going into the final quarter.

Denbigh's Seniors were more positive with their approach as they won 40-36 after a first quarter 16-3 lead.

Christine Bartley, one of two coaches from Denbigh, said she was very elated and appreciative of both wins. Janice Hancel-Walker is the other coach of the team.

“It was hard work throughout the season for many weeks as the players from both teams sometimes had to give up their weekends, along with their class times to prepared themselves to play matches,” Bartley said.

According to Bartley, the Junior final could have gone either way as both teams produced several errors as they were a bit nervous. “However, we were the defending champions and Holmwood would be coming hard at us to try and win, but the players held on to clinch a narrow 18-17 win.”

Bartley said it was a different affair in the Senior final. “I give Holmwood credit as they are a good team and they gave us two competitive and exciting finals, but Denbigh executed more and took charge of the match early to hold off any late attacking plays from our opponents to win.”
