Commander Two easily passes Derby test

Thursday, June 07, 2018

2000 Guineas winner Commander Two easily dispatched older rivals in an Open Allowance event, which took the spotlight in the absence of a trophy race at Caymanas Park yesterday.

The three-year-old bay gelding ( Forest Danger- Hurricane Michelle) under a confident ride from Javaniel Patterson won the seven-furlong (1,400m) event by one-and-a quarter lengths.

Out for the first time since toppling rivals in the mid-April 2000 Guineas, Commander Two's mettle was expected to be tested in the seven-horse field, as it was also his first time facing older horses.

However, the 2-5 favourite was patiently held in second position by Patterson after coming away behind Armageddon (Oniel Beckford) from the number six draw.

As the runners left the five and approached the half mile Armageddon was briefly joined by Birdie My Love (Oniel Scott) on the headline, before the imposing Commander Two again made his presence felt on the outside.

Approaching the home stretch, Commander Two slipped in front by a length still under a tight hold by Patterson despite the presence of late closers Bilingual (Dick Cardenas) and Lottery Ticket (Omar Walker) in striking distance.

It was not until the furlong pole that Commander Two showed his class in passing his Derby prep.

Commander Two came home in a final time of 1:25.3 behind splits of 23.3, 46.3 and 1:11.1.
