Another Vigorous to snatch St Catherine CupSaturday, January 12, 2019
Another Vigorous, the Rowan Mathie-conditioned talented bay gelding, will look to continue igniting the passion in racing fans when he takes on six rivals in the $1.15-million Open Allowance St Catherine Cup feature at Caymanas Park today.
The promising galloper showed a touch of class his second-consecutive win in the Gladiator Trophy on last (December 29, 2018) over seven furlongs (1,400 metres), at this same level.
Another Vigorous sat off the pace and turned up the pressure in deep stretch to beat rivals by 1 ¼ lengths in a good 1:25.0 minutes. Now back to sprinting in the St Catherine Cup over five and a half furlongs (1,100m), which he is quite comfortable with, it is going to take something out of the ordinary to deny him a third-consecutive win.
Don't expect Another Vigorous to be a runaway winner however, as runners such as Another Bullet, Campesino and Nuclear Flight all have the ability to press the favourite here, especially with a cup at stake. The other two runners, Exhilarate and Secret Traveller, are expected to be left behind in this one.
The Catherine Cup feature, which is the first major sprint race for the new racing season, is positioned as the ninth event on the 10-race card, with a post time of 4:40 pm. First race is scheduled to gallop off at noon.
Another Vigorous has made a dramatic change in recent times, moving flawlessly from a sprinter of considerable note to a horse who can sit and wait off the pace before striking in the straight, as shown in his win in the Gladiator Trophy. This win, however, speaks volumes of his talent as well as his rapid development, and with the presence of a weaker field than of the Gladiator, Another Vigorous has a glorious chance of repeating. Three-time champion jockey Dane Nelson, who was aboard in his last two wins, remains in the saddle.
Another Bullet was second behind Another Vigorous in the Gladiator Trophy and so, on paper, it seems difficult for this seven-year-old bay horse to turn the tables. But he is a consistent and versatile sort and even at top weight at 57.0 kgs (126 lb) he is not to be underestimated. Barbadian Simon Husbands will ride.
Veteran campaigner Campesino finished two lengths in fourth place behind Another Vigorous and Another Bullet in the Gladiator Trophy. Campesino will be better at this shorter distance and, given his back class, he will surely be in the mix here. Apprentice Tevin Foster will ride.
The dark horse in this race is Nuclear Flight, trained by Gary Subratie. Nuclear Flight has raced seven times and has won five races and two second-place finishes. Four of her wins came over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course and the other on the round course at five furlongs. Her two losses had come at the hands of Another Vigorous going around the bend. This filly is fast and it is going to be very interesting to see how she performs going around the bend, especially beyond five furlongs. If she handles that situation well, there is every chance of winning.
