THERE were two headline games in Week 9 that provided outstanding and entertaining NFL action Sunday evening and late into the night.

The events, while contrasting, were equally filled with the best the league has to offer.

Firstly, late Sunday afternoon, the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams treated the fans to an offensive slugfest that saw very little defensive presence. There were no sacks registered in the game and a total of 80 points were scored.

In a game where both quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Jared Goff, threw for 346 and 391 yards, respectively, the Saint emerged 45-35 winner, thereby taking their record to 7-1 (7-straight wins) and the record for the Rams (8-1) was soiled with their first loss.

The game started at a blistering pace with both teams scoring touchdowns on each of their first two possessions. Saints' second-year, top-flight running back Alvin Kamara had another impressive game (116 rushing yards with three touchdowns), but it was their leading wide receiver, Michael Thomas, who literally answered the call with a stellar afternoon — 12 receptions for a team-record 211 yards and the eventual game-winning touchdown.

The Rams host the Seattle Seahawks (4-4), while the Saints will visit the Cincinnati Bengals (5-3) in Week 10, and adding to their respective 8-1- and 7-1-win totals should be achieved with little resistance.

In stark contrast to the aforementioned Saints vs Rams shoot-out, the encounter between the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers was dominated by defence.

Despite the 31-17 final scoreline, the game was tied 17-17 at the end of the third quarter, but a fumble by Packers' running back Aaron Jones on the first play of the fourth quarter (inside Patriots' territory) proved to be the beginning of the end for Green Bay.

A few plays following the fumble, the Patriots dug into their bag of tricks for receiver Julian Edelman to throw a 37-yard pass to James White, followed by a stroll by White into the end zone three plays later.

The Patriots were without two of their best players on Sunday as Rob Gronkowski and Sony Michel were out due to injury. On the other side of the field, the Packers were playing with a depleted secondary but, up to the time of the fumble, managed to limit Tom Brady to 60 per cent completion (a season low) and the defensive line made him uncomfortable most of the night. Like the previous week against the Los Angeles Rams, the late turnover proved to be the undoing of the Packers and, while trailing 24-17, a blown coverage resulted in a wide-open Josh Gordon (130 yards with one touchdown) scoring a 51-yard catch and run that sealed the deal for the Patriots.

Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers finished with 294 and 259 yards respectively. They face the Tennessee Titans (4-4) and Miami Dolphins (5-4) this weekend with high expectations for a win. The Patriots will be looking for their seventh-straight win, while the Packers will look to rebound from two straight heartbreaking losses from two of the NFL's top teams.

The Chicago Bears (5-3) and the Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) both play at home against the Detroit Lions (3-5) and Arizona Cardinals (2-6) in Week 10 and should improve their standings at the end of both contests.

The LA Rams, despite losing last week, are still $4.00 JustBet favourites to win the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints in joint second-favourite position at $5.75. The Kansas City Chiefs complete the frame at $6.50.
