World Domino Champs for MoBay
Thursday, February 16, 2012
Over 500 overseas participants from the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, Cuba, Brazil, Jamaica and a number of other countries will pose off at the 10th Domino World Championship at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on June 3 through 10.
The teams will battle for US$30,000 (about J$2.5 million) in prizes, in what promises to be one of the most exciting domino tournaments on the planet.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the championship's organising committee, including president of the World Domino Federation Luis Guittard; general director Mauel Oquendo; president of the local body Reynold Smith; Independence Park Limited general manager Major Desmon Brown; and chairman of the local organising committee David Mais all paid a courtesy visit on the minister with responsibility for sports, Natalie Neita-Headley at Jamaica House on Tuesday.
Coming out of the visit, it was announced that the registered players will participate in singles, teams and junior divisions during the championship.
There was a presentation of three packs of dominoes that will be used at the tournament, along with commemorative medals which were handed over as a symbolic gesture between the World Domino Federation and Jamaica.
Minister Headley said her office will ensure that Jamaica, and in particular the city of Montego Bay, delivers a first-class tournament.
