UWI inaugural hockey tourney on today
Saturday, February 18, 2012
The Mona Pelicans are advanced in their plans to dominate The University of the West Indies inaugural Invitational Hockey Competition scheduled for today at the Mona Hockey Turf.
Top performing male and female clubs and college teams will mount the challenge for a $50,000 first place prize and the titles of leading goalscorer, best goalkeeper, best defender and most disciplined team.
Director of Sports at the University of the West Indies, Dalton Myers, says the addition of the event to the institution's calendar is a strategic move to diversify the University's annual sports agenda.
"The addition of a hockey tournament represents the part of the puzzle that was needed to intensify our thrust towards sports development. We are the hosts of several other sporting activities; however we have placed special emphasis on making this one a reality because we fervently believe that this will add newness and breathe fresh air into our annual sports agenda while promoting the game of hockey and providing new opportunity for our students".
Participating schools include The University of Technology, The University of the West Indies, Sharpes Hockey Club, Circus Hockey Club, Explorers Hockey Club, Munro College Old Boys, GC Foster College, Raiders Hockey Club, St Andrew Hockey Club, Strikers Hockey Club, Excelsior Hockey Club and Tropics Hockey Club.
The tournament begins at 9:00 am with male matches between UWI and the Circus Hockey Club in field one, and GC Foster College and Sharpes Hockey Club in field two.
The competition is expected to conclude at 6:30 pm with an awards ceremony after which an After Lyme will be held from 7:00-10:00 pm.
