JAMAICA's Sunshine Girls had a mixed bag winning one, drawing one, and losing a third of their three matches played on the opening day of the Fast5 World Netball Series at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on Friday.

The senior players, who were the busiest team on the opening day of competition, lost their opening encounter to South Africa 25-34, drew 38-38 with New Zealand, and then edged Malawi 32-31.

In their opening game against South Africa, the Jamaicans led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter, before the Proteas took a 14-11 half-time lead and then 29-18 at the end of the third quarter.

The second match saw the Jamaicans starting down 5-7 to the Silver Ferns at the end of the first quarter 11-16, at the end of the second quarter, and 26-27 before taking the power play to draw level 38-38 at the final whistle.

In the final game of the day, the Jamaicans edged Malawi by a single point after losing the first quarter 6-8, coming back to take the second quarter 16-12, and then 20-26 in the third before coming back in the final quarter for victory off the back of a six-pointer from Jhaniele Fowler.

The Jamaicans must win their next two games against England and Australia to finish in the final four on points and advance to the semi-finals.
