Rockers beat Spartans in SDF Community Basketball Championships playoffs

ARNETT Gardens Rockers defeated defending champions Spanish Town Spartans 65-54 as the 2018 Sports Development Foundation (SDF)/Southern Basketball Conference (SBC) Howard McCatty Community League Championships playoffs got underway last Sunday.

The Rockers have now chalked up their 10th consecutive win from as many starts, while the Spartans were losing their third game, also from 10 outings.

Arnel Campbell led the Rockers with a game-high 31 points and 12 rebounds, while Akeem Brooks was Spartans' main scorer with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Rockers led 23-13 at the first-quarter break and 42-29 at half-time. At the third quarter it was 46-42 to Rockers.

Red Hills Road Real Lions made it 10 wins from as many starts by defeating Portmore Vipers 74-55. It was also the Vipers' sixth defeat in 10 outings. The principal scorers for the Lions were Andrew Whilby with 13 points and six assists.

Leading the scoring for the Vipers were Swayvion Henry with 28 points, and Jumario Grant with 12 points. The quarterly scores with Real Lions ahead were 21-14, 42-34, and 56-38.

Majesty Gardens Legends defeated Harbour View Supernovas 71-62 for their ninth win to go with their sole loss from 10 games, while it was the fourth defeat for the losers from 10 games.

Jermaine Brown with 26 points and Baldon Todd with 12 points led the scoring for the Legends, while Jerome Thomas with 16 points and Fabian Sutherland with 10 points scored the most for the losers. Quarterly scores for the winners were 19-15, 40-30, and 58-46.

Meanwhile, EXED Heats overcame a 24-point deficit to defeat Delacree Park Hot Steppers 76-66 to register their seventh win from 10 games. Leading the scoring for the Heats were Omar Barnes with 20 points and seven steals, and Anthony White with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The quarterly scores for the Heats were 17-21, 27-43, and 52-57.

The championships playoffs have been divided into four groups with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals.

Group A – Red Hills Road Real Lions, Portmore Vipers, St George's Saints. Group B – EXED Heats, Delacree Park Hot Steppers, Swift Sons.

Group C - Majesty Gardens Legends, Harbour View Supernovas, Portmore Thunders. Group D – Spanish Town Spartans, Arnett Gardens Rockers, and Rae Town Raptors.
