After 18 finals at the ESSSA/JN Eastern Track and Field Championship on at the National Stadium, former champions Buff Bay High at press time yesterday were leading the points table with 153.

They were followed by defending champions Oberlin High 125 points, St Mary High third on 66 points Glengoffe High 60.5 and Titchfield High on 44.

On the first day of the two-day competition, four records were broken. St Mary High School's Jodeen Williams accounted for two in the Class One Girls 200 and 400 metres, clocking new times of 24.48 and 55.75 seconds, respectively.

Williams told the Observer that shattering the 400-metre record was a surprise. "I expected to break the 200 metres record, but the 400 metres was a suprise as my teammate Titania Markland (59.75 seconnds) is better than me," she said.

"I am looking to win the 100 metres also, but I will have stiff competition," Williams sdded.

The other records fell to Margaret McKay of Oberlin who timed 4:59.91 for the Class Two Girls 1,500 metres and Paul Bogle's Robert Thomas, who threw 50.13 metres for the Class One Boys discus.
