PM opposes idea of Jamaica's secession from Windies

PRIME Minister and Minister of Sport, Portia Simpson Miller, is firmly opposed to any suggestion of Jamaica seceding from a unified West Indies cricket team and standing on its own.
Speaking at the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) 2011 awards dinner held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Saturday, Simpson Miller said recent talks about going it alone in the face of the declining and often inconsistent fortunes of the regional team and the continued exclusion of Jamaica and former West Indies captain, Chris Gayle, was not a move she supported.
"What we need to do is regain the sense of unity to once again dominate the world," she said.
As it related to the current impasse between Gayle and the management of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) , Simpson Miller said the dispute was untenable and that she was disturbed by how long it had been allowed to continue.
"Justice delayed is justice denied. This matter demands an amicable resolution as quickly as possible," she said.
JCA president, Lindel Wright, told the Observer that he was in agreement with Simpson Miller's position on the issue.
"The whole concept of West Indies cricket started f from 1920. What we need to do is get together as a region and pick the best players to represent us (West Indies). It ought not to be seen as Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, but to look at it in a global way as three Caribbean nations."
"It's long overdue. It's over a year now and there needs to be some sort of resolve to bring it to some closure," said Wright.
He pointed out that the JCA had made appeals on Gayle's behalf to the hierarchy of the WICB.

I support the Prime Minister wholeheartedly. What if Jamaica wasn't at the forefront presently? I remember when Trinidad & Barbados usually dominate regional cricket none of this nonsense was not mentioned. If so I was not privileged with such information. I believe in unity and we should stand by the West Indies Cricket Team and support them 100%. WIBC is being very childish in addressing Gayle's issue. They need to sort this incident out in a positive manner ASAP. I rest my case.

I can understand the politics to support a split, but what about cricket!!!! A Jamaican team would make better sports and business. That's good politics.

I disagree with the PM.
Standing beside her is Tamar Lambert......he cannot make the West Indies team despite being an outstanding captain. If Jamaica were on its own he would be an international cricketer and in addition, more players around the region would get international exposure. Jamaica can beat Bangladesh and be very competitive with the other cricketing nations.
Time to break up

I don't think this stand off is ending anytime soon,what Sammy did with opening match against Jamaica tells me he doesn't want to play cricket with Gayle.Sammy,Gibson and the board will be place for a while and neither sides seem to be backing down

I totally disagree with the Prime Minister. West Indies cricket has little or no future of a vibrant nature. A JOINT team comprised of several politically INDEPENDENT nations is not relevant in the 21st century.The new way forward is to develop and unleash the talent of several (ultimately) Caribbean Test playing teams on the cricketing world. If little Jamaica can DOMINATE the sprinting world , why not play test cricket? I am not even hot for the regionalist CCJ either. Trade, UWI, OK!!!
