Onyia shatters records at Western Champs

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Munro College's Emannuel Onyia accounted for two of five records at yesterday's eliminations of the Milo/COCAA Boys Western Championship at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.

The Nigerian-born athlete broke his own marks in the Class One discus and shot put events.

Onyia first threw 52.26m to win the discus, erasing the 51.10 set last year before heaving 17.56m on his first effort in the shot to smash the 17.54m mark he set two years ago at Herbert Morrison.

Onyia's Class Two teammate Kino Dunkley was also in record-breaking form, putting the shot 15.07m to break the 14.44 set by another Munro student, Rajae Gayle, in 2008.

On the track, Dwayne Hibbert clocked 4:10.33 to cop his 1500m heat, faster than the 4:12.38 set by Albert Town's Dane Jackson in 2008.

Shemar Salmon of STETHS smashed the 3,000m mark, running the entire race in a heavy drizzle to clock 10:17.59, lowering the 10:24.4 set in 2009 by Munro's Levar Dunchie.

Also yesterday, Cornwall's Alric Ottey leaped an impressive 6.23m to win the Class Three long jump, ahead of STETHS' Akeem Allen, 5.91, and Renardo Lee of Rusea's, 5.45.

Meanwhile, the marquee match-up between IAAF World Youth 100m champion Odail Todd of Green Island and Munro's Delano Williams, the defending Class One 100 and 200m champion, is set to be a classic tomorrow at the MoBay Sports Complex.

After 12 finals when rain interrupted the meet yesterday, defending champions Munro led with 144 points, followed by STETHS on 78.5, Petersfield 69, Herbert Morrison 61.5 and Cornwall 45.
