MLS duo joins up for Boyz friendly
Tuesday, March 20, 2012
OVERSEAS-BASED Jermaine Taylor and Je-Vaughn Watson joined the Reggae Boyz group yesterday ahead of tomorrow's friendly international game against Costa Rica at the National Stadium at 8:00 pm.
The pair from the Houston Dynamo of US Major League Soccer is expected to bring much needed experience against a quality Costa Rican team, which is scheduled to arrive later today.
However, two other invitees — veteran goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts of Toronto FC and Arsenal's 18-year-old Nigel Neita — will not make the trip.
According to Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) general secretary Horace Reid, "Ricketts asked to be excused as he is recovering from a slight knock", while "Neita's club has refused to release him".
Still, assistant head coach Alfredo Montesso, who guided yesterday's training session at the National Stadium in the absence of head coach Theodore Whitmore, is upbeat about the team's final major training session.
"Preparations have gone well. I think the team was in good shape today, especially after they played (in the Red Stripe Premier League ) last night (Sunday)," he told the Observer at the end of the session.
"They returned for the campaign today and I think the vibes was good as we were joined by Taylor and Watson, so that is something that is going to lift up the rest of the players and bring some more experience and chemistry to the team," he added.
Montesso is expecting a tough test from the Central Americans, who have gone unbeaten in their last four outings, inclusive of 1-0 and 2-0 away victories over Wales and Venezuela and 1-1 and 2-2 draws with Cuba and world champions Spain.
Meanwhile, the JFF has advised members of the public that tickets for the game will not be sold at the National Stadium on the day of the game.
The JFF is also reminding that the fee from Independence Park Limited for the main parking area is $200.
According to a release issued yesterday, "in order to ensure safety and convenience to all, patrons are asked to adhere to the Public Advisory from the Constabulary Force regarding traffic protocols for the match."
