JC retain U-19 Schoolboy hockey crown

AN Odene Abbott double strike and a Jonte Johnson penalty corner gave Jamaica College a 3-0 win over Black River to retain their Under-19 Schoolboy hockey title at Mona on Friday.
Abbott scored in the 11th and 40th minutes to bring his tally to three, while Johnson, the engine for the Old Hope Road boys, scored for the Aubyn Ferguson-coached outfit.
"We planned for them (Black River High); strategically we played certain players in certain positions and we knew if we were able to overcome their physical aspects of the game we would beat them.
"Congrats for Black River for achieving and coming to the final," added Ferguson.
Black River reached the final after only two seasons in the competition, led by skipper Onuque Salmon, Rodye Robinson, Damion Baker, Kemar Adams, and Agein Bennett.
JC's Odean Cargill, Nahjair Arnold and Rockkeino Salmon, along with Abbott and Johnson, were crucial to the Navy Blue team holding on to their title.
Black River's coach Niijon Sanford believed his boys did well, despite not winning the title.
"They give of their best and we see that work is being done," added Sanford, whose credited team work and effort for the St Elizabeth-based school to have reached this far after only two years.
In the third place play-off, Ogayne Campbell and Leon Waugh scored for Mona to beat Excelsior, 2-1. Hakeem Cole was on target with the lone goal for the Mountain View Avenue-based school.
Kingston College defeated 10-man Wolmer's, 3-1, to capture fifth place, with goals from Rashad McCarthy, Mark-Andrew Cole and Daron Hanson.
