Champions knocked out of schools hockey league

DEFENDING champions Jamaica College and Alpha Academy have both been knocked out of the 2017 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) high schools boys and girls hockey competition after suffering losses in the latter stages of the competition at the Mona Hockey Field last week.

As a result, new champions will be crowned in the boys and girls finals scheduled to be played tomorrow at the same venue.

The finals will see Excelsior High taking on Mona High in the girls’ competition, while Munro College go up against Excelsior High in the boys’ equivalent.

Jamaica College were blanked 3-0 by Denbigh High in their quarter-finals with goals from Jowayne James in the 20th, Christopher Wilson in the 38th, and Richard Piper in the 45th minutes.

Excelsior High then clipped Denbigh High 2-1 with two goals from Shemar Gordon in the 11th and 46th minutes. Jowayne Simpson scored the lone goal for Denbigh in the 48th minute in their semi-final.

in the other semi-final, Munro College tagged Mona High 2-1 through two goals from Nicholas Collins in the 11th and 23rd minutes, with Jowayne Simpson scoring the lone goal for the losers in the 48th minute.

In the girls’ semi-finals, Joelle Stewart’s goal in the 34th minute gave Excelsior High a 1-0 win over Papine High, while Mona High beat Alpha 3-2 on penalties after both teams had played to a 0-0 draw at full-time.

Meanwhile, in the play-offs for positions in the boys’ section, Kingston College, through a 33rd-minute goal from Adawi Aiken, clipped Tivoli Gardens High 1-0, while Papine High tagged Jamaica College 3-0.

In the girls’ positional play-offs Denbigh High defeated St Andrew High for Girls 4-2 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw at full-time.

Merl Grove High and Immaculate Conception High ended 0-0 at full- time, with the former winning 1-0 in the penalty shootout.

In other quarter-final action in the boys’ section, Mona High beat Tivoli Gardens 5-4 on penalties after they played to a 1-1 draw at full-time; Munro College clipped Kingston College through a 10th-minute goal from D’Andre Smalling; while Excelsior High defeated Papine High 4-0 through goals from Christopher Reid in the fifth and 42nd minutes, Shemar Gordon in the ninth, and Shakeem McDonald in the 44th minutes.

The results of girls’ quarter-finals saw champions Alpha clipping Merl Grove 1-0 through Ayanna White’s 40th-minute goal; Mona beating Immaculate Conception 3-1 with two goals from Tara Bailey in the 41st and 49th minutes and Danielle Douglas in the 46th minute. Zoe Duncan got the lone goal in the 30th minute for Immaculate Conception.

Two goals from Hayley Duncan in the 13th and 36th minutes gave Papine High a 2-0 win over St Andrew High School for Girls; Excelsior High with goals from Shenelle Smith in the eighth and Joelle Steward in the 30th minutes tagged Denbigh High 2-0.
