EDWIN Allen High School’s Tara Sue Barnett became the first Jamaican school girl to throw the discus over 50m on Saturday when she won the event at the second Ben Francis Invitational meet at Vere Technical High in Clarendon.
The 17-year-old who will compete in Class 1 at the ISSA Girls Champs in late March, smashed the National Junior Record of 48.71m set in March 2010 by former St Hugh’s High student Candecia Bernard.
The mark was also a qualifying standard for the IAAF World Junior Championships to be held in early July in Barcelona, Spain.
She joins Calabar school boys Ashinia Miller and Fedrick Dacres who have already qualified for the throwing events at the WJC.
On Saturday, Barnett beat teammates and national representatives Daniel Thomas and Sasha-gay Marston who were second and third respectively.
