KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell has pulled out of the International Association of Atletics Federation (IAAF) World Relays set for this weekend in The Bahamas.
President of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Dr Warren Blake told OBSERVER ONLINE that the sprinter reported light muscle pain and as a precaution said he would prefer not to participate in the two-day championship on April 22-23.
Powell held the 100 metres world record between June 2005 and May 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds.
He has consistently broken the 10-second barrier in competition, with his personal best of 9.72 seconds being the fifth-fastest time in the history of the event.
Dr Blake said sprinter Julian Forte and Rusheen McDonald, Jamaica’s national 400m record holder, are also out due to injury.
