With her brother's sentencing just hours away, Donna Wilson, sister of dancehall deejay Ninjaman, is keeping a positive attitude.

“Mi a deal with it good. My bredda nuh do nutten, a di past dem a use an' a try bring him down but dat can't get wi down. Di family will be there in court to support him,” Wilson told Splash on Wednesday.

Ninjaman (given name Desmond Ballentine) was found guilty on November 20 for the 2009 murder of Ricardo “Ricky Trooper” Johnson on Marl Road in Kingston. Joint accused Jahneil Ballentine, Ninjaman's son, and Dennis Clayton, were also found guilty.

The deejay is being represented by Queen's Counsel Valerie Neita Robertson.

Wilson said she spoke to her brother recently.

“Him did sick inna di week, him seh him a get di flu. I haven't spoken to him since but dat is jus' it.”

She stated that her family stands by Ninjaman, whose case was first mentioned in court in 2009, and had seen 17 missed trial dates and 23 mentions. When it finally got underway in the Home Circuit Court on October 17, Justice Martin Gayle revoked Ninjaman's bail which was granted in 2012. He was taken into custody and Gayle demanded the trial start immediately.

Two weeks later, Ninjaman was hospitalised after suffering a mild heart attack. The case was recently transferred to a special court that handles cases on the books for more than five years.

Ironically, in January, the 51-year-old artiste was invited by the National Security Ministry to speak to members of the police force on ways to combat crime.

Hailing from St Mary, the veteran toaster rose to prominence in the 1980s and adopted the sinister moniker, Don Gorgon. He is known for songs including Protection, Ninja Mi Ninja, Border Clash and Cover Me featuring Tinga Stewart. He also had a role in the 1999 movie Third World Cop.

Ninjaman has had his share of the law and has done prison time.

He is the second high-profile dancehall artiste found guilty of murder in recent years.

In 2014, Adidja “Vybz Kartel” Palmer along with fellow deejay Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell were convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. They are currently serving life sentences.
