Highgate Primary School were crowned Stanley Amritt Primary School football champions after defeating Lewisburg Primary School 2-0 on Friday at the Richmond Community Centre football field in St Mary.

Bromley Primary School earned third place thanks to a 5-1 victory over Richmond Primary School.

The competition, contested among eight primary and preparatory school teams in the Richmond/Highgate area, was arranged by the group United Friends of Highgate.

“This competition is sponsored and named in honour of one of our former national footballers, Stanley “Bobby Charlton” Amritt, who has contributed a lot to the St Mary community and this competition seeks to discover and develop the talent of our youths that can be harnessed,” organiser Reverend Seymour Hutchinson told the Jamaica Observer North & East.

Bringing greetings on behalf of the St Mary Football Association, second Vice-President Lenford Purcell, said: “The St Mary Football association is pleased with this competition as it helps to develop football in the parish and unearth new talents that can be harnessed, and encourages interest in the sport.

“This competition is named after one of our former national players, Stanley Amritt, who is still alive and [who] was called 'Bobby Charlton' [after the former England football star] because of his skill and style of play. I will encourage players, coaches and teachers to research about Bobby Charlton and Stanley Amritt and their contribution to the sport.”

The organisers handed out medals, trophies and prize money to the winners.
