Three killed in alleged shoot-out with policeFriday, November 10, 2017
SALT SPRING, St James — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the shooting deaths of three men in the tough Salt Spring community of St James, during an alleged shoot-out with the police yesterday.
Two of the men have so far been identified as Omar Sawyers and Christopher Thorpe, both of the inner-city community.
According to the police, the alleged gunmen reportedly opened fire on a team from the Mobile Reserve, who were conducting an operation in the community at about 6:00 am yesterday.
The gunfire was reportedly returned by the police team and the three men were later found suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Mount Salem, where they were pronounced dead.
The police say they recovered one Ruger .40 pistol and eight rounds of ammunition as well as a Bersa .22 pistol and a magazine with five .22 rounds at the scene of the alleged shoot-out.
Residents in the community claimed that sometime around 6:00 am yesterday, they heard a barrage of explosions in a section of the community.
Several residents who gathered at the scene of the alleged shoot-out yesterday claimed that at least one of the deceased was innocent.
“I know Omar (Sawyers) from a long time, and him nuh give trouble, he has never been on the wrong side of the law. So I strongly believe that he was killed in cold blood,” said a resident, who declined to give his name.
