PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — An eight-year-old schoolgirl died in a fire that destroyed her home in the central south coast village of Moruga yesterday, police said.

They said that the bodies of Aaliya Primus, a primary school pupil, and her 40-year-old aunt, Neisha Gopaul, were discovered by fire officers after the blaze that left 10 other family members homeless.

“This is a sad morning. A fire at the home of the Gopaul family… has claimed the lives of two family members. I am asking for your prayers of comfort for this family in their time of need,” said Dr Lovell Francis, the minister of state in the Ministry of Education and the parliamentary representative for the area.

The police said the fire began during the early hours of the morning and a councillor for the area, Haniff Salamat, said the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
