NATIONAL Security Minister Robert Montague says the traffic ticket amnesty, which was scheduled to start today, has been postponed until August 2.

In a release from the Ministry of National Security, Montague explained that the new start date is to ensure all systems are in place.

The amnesty will allow motorists to pay outstanding traffic tickets without attracting demerit points; giving them the opportunity to begin with a clean slate before the new Road Traffic Act is implemented.

The updated Road Traffic Act will repeal and replace the existing Road Traffic Act of 1938, and will establish new road traffic offences as well as provide increased penalties for current offences.

The amnesty was announced by Minister of Transport and Mining Mike Henry during his contribution to the 2017/2018 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on April 12.
