Woman dies in crash a day after US vacation
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — A routine visit to the dressmaker turned deadly yesterday for Sadie Shakesphere when the Toyota Corolla motor car she was driving ran off the road ended in a yard at Harriott Meadows on New Green Road, narrowly missing the gardener.
The 24-year-old Shakesphere had just returned from vacation in the United States on Wednesday.
According to the gardener, Glester Stewart, he was working in the yard about 10:00 yesterday morning when he heard a sound over his head "and when I looked up I saw the car, which landed about five metres away from me". Stewart said the vehicle uprooted an orange tree, then crashed in the side of the house.
Stewart, who had blood all over his shirt, said the female driver was thrown from the vehicle after it became airbound.
Stewart said he assisted children who were travelling in the back of the Corolla and then assisted in removing a man from the front passenger seat after he heard groaning.
The police transported the injured persons to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where Shakesphere was pronounced dead and the passengers — 39-year-old Garfield Stephenson, fouryear-old Tashana Shakesphere and an unidentified boy, said to be about seven years old, were admitted.
