Winning cultural mix
Thursday, August 09, 2012
Tynielle Chambers (in aqua blouse) and Toni-Kay Dawkins from the marketing department at Kirk Distributors Limited , Kingston, on Tuesday explain their display of photographs, coins, food and other items synonymous with Jamaica’s history and rich culture that won their team first place in the company’s Department Cultural Display competition on Monday, Independence Day. The competition was organised to mark Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence from British rule. “...To commemorate Jamaica 50 the company organised a cultural display competition to encourage staff members to research and collect historical items to reflect their cultural awareness,” explained Lanna Bennett, Kirk Distributors General Manager.
She told the Jamaica Observer that the competition forced staff members to go back to the basics and to connect with elders in their family to gather some of the items.
Meanwhile, Karlene Powell, human resource manager of the distribution company, said the creative approach was used to educate workers about Jamaica’s historical journey. (Photo: Lionel Rookwood)
