Police arrest second suspect in businessman's killing

Wednesday, January 09, 2013

ANOTHER suspect in the brutal robbery and slaying of Corporate Area businessman Melvin Chung has been taken into custody.

Head of the Kingston Central Police Division Superintendent Steve McGregor confirmed the arrest yesterday.

According to McGregor, homicide investigators will soon close the book on Chung's murder.

"We are onto what took place. We have two of the men and we know the names of two other men who are involved. We are well on the way to solving that murder," McGregor told the Jamaica Observer.

The two men, who are said to hail from a volatile community in downtown Kingston, are set to undergo identification parades later this week.

Police report that about 1:30 pm on Saturday Chung was in the vicinity of 38 East Street, in the company of a security guard, when the two were approached by a group of men who robbed them of a large quantity of cash as well as two firearms — a .38 revolver and a 9mm Browning pistol.

The men then shot Chung dead before escaping in the area.

Chung operated several Total gas stations as well as a security company and other businesses, and was known as a benevolent man who helped the needy.

"Many persons are upset over what happened to him," McGregor told the Observer yesterday.
