Phillips to table Supplementary Estimates today

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

FINANCE and Public Service Minister Dr Peter Phillips will table the second Supplementary Estimates for this financial year when Parliament meets at 2:00 pm today.

Gordon House yesterday advised that the tabling of the Estimates, which had been promised early, would be among the agenda items for today. Earlier this month, Dr Phillips, at a Jamaica House News Briefing, said the country's fiscal position was "disastrously off track". He further forecasted a $10-billion "fiscal gap" for the current financial year which ends in March.

Meanwhile, Gordon House yesterday said minister of transport, works and housing Dr Omar Davies is to make a statement on the US$400-million Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme and the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP). He is also expected to table a Ministry Paper on JEEP.

During the "Questions and Answers to Questions" segment of the House, minister of water, land, environment and climate change Robert Pickersgill is to respond to questions from the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party's Member of Parliament JC Hutchinson. Minister of agriculture and fisheries Roger Clarke is also slated to respond to questions posed by Hutchinson as well.

It will be extremely difficult for the finance minister to present a supplementary budget that will gain the approval of the masses of this country in terms of providing jobs for them in the short taking into consideration the state of the finances of the country.....however it is best to lay on the harsh reality now and move to correct what has gone wrong over the years...

From what was inherited from the previous government it will be extremely difficult for the finance minister to do anything at this time that will find favour with masses in terms of providing jobs and to alleviate the plight of the populace in the short term.....He just got to do what he has to do....
