IRONSHORE, St James — One hotel worker was killed and four others injured when tragedy struck here at the RIU Hotel, yesterday afternoon.

According to a highly placed police source, the five, who were members of the hotel’s maintenance team, were working in a boiler room when an explosion occurred.

They were taken to hospital where one was pronounced dead and the others admitted, two of whom are said to be in critical condition.

Up to press time last night, the identity of the deceased employee was not disclosed.

The police source was unable to say what triggered the blast.

In the meantime, numerous calls to the head of the St James Fire Department and the Spanish hotel went unanswered yesterday afternoon.

Workers were tight-lipped about the incident.

When contacted, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association Omar Robinson said he could confirm the incident but could not confirm "the specifics".

When the Jamaica Observer visited the hotel yesterday, several emergency personnel were seen near the gate of the property which was cordoned off with police tape.
