ANGELLA Freeman sat slumped in a chair at the front of her St Andrew-based Cooreville Gardens home over the weekend. Grief was etched on her face as she tried to express how she felt following the death of her son.

"He was my all. He was a young man who was a role model to everyone around him," said the distraught mother, who is also the sister of Levan Freeman, the mayor of Port Maria. Family and friends tried to console the woman as she spoke.

Police reported that at around 10:00 pm on Sunday, November 18, Aundre Mitchell, 26-year-old employee of Jamaica National Building Society, was riding along the Washington Boulevard when his motor cycle collided with a motor vehicle which crushed him to death.

Despite a desperate attempt to rush him to hospital, Mitchell succumbed to his injuries.

The death of the young man comes days before he would celebrate his birthday.

"He was to celebrate his birthday in a couple of days," said his mother.

She said that her son was just months away from completing his masters degree at Mona School of Business.

Hours after the incident, the victim's father Donald Mitchell, 58, the former chauffeur for the late Cabinet minister Horace Clarke, stood in a daze at the gate of his home in Cooreville Gardens. He tried to maintain a calm demeanour but the trembling voice betrayed him.

"Boss me tell you me lose the best son ever," said the senior Mitchell.

"In fact, not only was he the most reliable person I knew, he was a determined person who worked hard to achieve. He was even a role model to me his father," said Mitchell, who paused a few times during the interview to reflect.

Last week as the senior Mitchell spoke, several close associates and friends of his son expressed shock as they gathered in the community.

"He was a person who all the young people in the community looked up to, he was always there to extend a helping hand or to offer a word of encouragement," said Sheldon Edwards, a friend of Mitchell.

The Duhaney Park police are still carrying out their investigation into the incident.
