A man accused of causing the death of an old woman in a car accident was last Wednesday offered $250,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The accused, Alvin Mitchell, 52, of Russell Road, Kingston, was offered bail by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and is scheduled to return to court on March 21.

Mitchell was arrested and charged following the February 5 death of Violet Lynch, 68, of Greenwich Road, Kingston 13, who was killed when she was hit while standing at a bus stop in Cross Roads, St Andrew.

According to police reports, about 7:00 am, Mitchell was driving a Toyota Corolla along Retirement Road, when he overtook a motor vehicle which had stopped at the traffic sign.

Mitchell’s car then reportedly collided with a SsangYong motorcar which hit Lynch, pinning her to a wall.

Lynch and three occupants of the SsangYong motor vehicle were taken to hospital where Lynch was admitted, but later succumbed to her injuries.

Mitchell was then taken into custody and charged.

In the meantime, Mitchell is scheduled to also answer to charges of disobeying a traffic signal and dangerous driving in the Traffic Court in relation to the incident.
