ST ANN, Jamaica — One of three men charged in relation to the murder of police Detective Corporal Ransford Durrant was offered bail when he appeared before the St Ann Resident Magistrate Court on Friday, February 22. 

Anthony Bamberry, a 24-year-old butcher was offered bail in the sum of $1 million after his attorney Nathan Morrison was successful in his bail application before Senior Resident Magistrate Andrea Thomas.

During his last court appearance Bamberry was refused bail when he appeared before RM Calys Wiltshire on January 29.

Two other accused in the matter also appeared in St Ann’s Bay RM court on Friday.  The matter was however heard in-camera.

The two, Anthony Brown and Wesmore Lewis are currently without legal representation. They were reportedly remanded.

Brown was one of two men who escaped from the St Ann’s Bay lock-up late last year.

Corporal Durrant was shot and killed on Monday, December 17 while visiting one of his children in Windsor Heights, St Ann’s Bay.

Allegations against Bamberry are that on the day of the killing he informed the alleged shooter that the policeman was at a shop in the area.  Bamberry was reportedly sent by the alleged shooter to purchase ganja when he returned and notified him that the police was at a nearby shop. One of the two men now in custody is believed to be the one who pulled the trigger.

The police corporal was shot in the back of the head. Bamberry was arrested and charged as an accomplice to the murder.

The matter will again come before the court on May 20.
