KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police have reported that the gunshot wound suffered by Opposition senator Arthur Williams Monday night was apparently self-inflicted.

Reports are that Williams was with friends at a popular nightclub in St Andrew when the incident occurred. Details of the shooting were not revealed, as investigations were still ongoing. 

“Williams’ firearm was turned over to the police who visited his home earlier today,” said Commanding Officer for St Andrew Central, Fitz Bailey, who also dismissed claims that the senator was not cooperating with the police.

“I wish to make it clear that Senator Arthur Williams has been speaking with police investigators and is cooperating in full with all of our investigative requirements,” Bailey said adding that Williams has been “interviewed in the prescribed manner for such incidents.”

Earlier today the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) said that information surrounding the shooting of Williams would be made public after the police concluded investigations.

 “We wish Senator Williams a speedy recovery and convey our best regards to his family and friends,” JLP general secretary Dr Horace Chang said in the statement.
