C'Bar, XLCR face-off in Manning Cup

THE clash between Calabar High and Excelsior will highlight today's round of matches in the 2011 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup football competition.

The Group A encounter which will be played at Calabar's Red Hills Road base will feature two of the competition's free-scoring teams.

Calabar, who last won the Manning Cup title in 2005, have tallied 12 goals from two matches so far to be on top of the group with six points.

Excelsior High, the 2003 and 2004 winners, are on the same number of points, but have scored two goals less and trail their rivals on goal difference. Neither team has conceded a goal thus far.

In the other Group A match, fourth-placed Holy Trinity High will host third-placed St Catherine High.

Group C leaders Charlie Smith High (seven points) are set to welcome Dunoon Technical to the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, while second-placed Wolmer's Boys' (five points) host cellar team Vauxhall High.

In the other Group C fixture, surprise package Ascot High will try to maintain pressure on the top two when they seek victory against a determined Haile Selassie High outfit.

Group E favourites St George's College will travel to JACISERA Park to face Tarrant High, while Meadowbrook High entertain Spanish Town High and Edith Dalton James High welcome Old Harbour Road-based Innswood High.

All matches are slated to start at 3:30 pm.

In two rescheduled games played yesterday, the hard-running Hydel High team stunned Group B rivals Tivoli Gardens High, 2-0, at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, while in Group G, visitors St Andrew Technical clipped Jose Marti Technical, 1-0.
