UNFPA head to visit

Thursday, February 23, 2012

EXECUTIVE Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Dr Babatunde Osotimehin will arrive in the island today for a three-day visit to participate in an internal review of the role of UNFPA in helping Jamaica achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

During the visit Dr Osotimehin will hold talks with government ofocials, including Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade AJ Nicholson.

He will also pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

The deliberations will form part of ongoing dialogue within the UN system on middle-income countries, and will inform the development of UNFPA's strategy for engagement with such countries.

Similar reviews are being done in other middle-income countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr Osotimehin became the fourth executive director of UNFPA in January 2011. He holds the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Before this appointment, he served as Nigeria's health minister.
