LIME to slash prepaid mobile Internet rates May 1Monday, April 16, 2012
TELECOMMUNICATIONS provider LIME yesterday announced sharp cuts in its prepaid mobile Internet rates, which it says will continue its drive to increase Internet penetration nationally.
A new slate of prepaid mobile Internet service packages to be rolled out on May 1 will see rates slashed by as much as 66 per cent, the company said in a news release.
Under the new rates, customers can receive Internet service for one day for as little as $100, down from $300 previously. Also beginning next month, LIME’s seven-day prepaid package will be slashed by more than 50 per cent to $600 from $1,250. The 30-day package will cost $2,500, down from $3,500.
LIME does not offer unlimited mobile Internet service, unlike its main competitor Digicel.
LIME’s postpaid mobile Internet rates will remain the same. However, the data allocation for both the “casual user” and “regular user” packages will be increased. Customers opting for the “casual user” plan will now get 2GB instead of 1GB for $2,000. In the same vein, the “regular user” plan now offers 4GB instead of 3GB for $3,000.
In the meantime, LIME said that by making laptops more affordable, the company has removed a critical barrier to Internet access faced by many citizens, the cost of a computer. Last year, LIME introduced the FLIPtop, a low-cost laptop which the company bundles with its postpaid ADSL and mobile Internet service packages.
“Now, by lowering the cost of prepaid mobile Internet, LIME is making it even easier for a wider cross section of persons to access the Internet as customers can use readily available devices such as mobile phones to surf the Web and send e-mail, among other things,” said the telecoms company.
It added: “LIME’s mobile Internet service gives customers the ease and convenience of accessing the Internet with wireless devices such as smartphones, MIFI units, dongles and USB modems or any other enabled devices.”
The reduction in mobile Internet rates follows LIME’s recently announced promotion, which includes 27 minutes of in-network calls free after the first three minutes of calls to its mobile users, as well as 100 free texts per day after sending the first three texts.
