Monday, March 20, 2017

Three deejays who helped take dancehall to the mainstream during the 1980s, are on a retro tour of the United States.

Tiger, Johnny P and Lady G comprise ‘The Legends Tour’ which started February 25 at Mingles in The Bronx, New York.

The tour also played clubs in Baltimore and Washington DC this month. This weekend, it moves to Massachusetts with dates in Worcester and Springfield.

Harold ‘Bigga’ McLarty put together the trek which is scheduled to end in July with outdoor gigs.

“Di response has been excellent. These artistes are di foundation of di game an’ have hits after hits to give a quality show,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

Of particular interest is Tiger, who suffered extensive head injuries in a motor accident in January 1994 when his career was on a high.

Several comeback attempts have failed but McLarty said the deejay’s health has improved significantly.

“Everything good. Him go out every time an’ deliver.”

McLarty produced some of Tiger’s biggest hits including Bam Bam and Wanga Gut. He also produced other major ‘80s songs like Sorry by singjay Foxy Brown and Major Mackerel’s Don Man.

Johnny P and Tiger have been performing together since last year when they appeared at the Grooving In The Park show in Queens, New York.

Known for songs such as Tight Clothes and Bike Back, Johnny P said the enthusiastic audiences at ‘The Legends Tour’ shows there is a market for vintage dancehall.

“Wi have great songs an’ di people still love dem, not jus’ from our age group but di youth dem.”
