Shelf Talk
Thursday, December 22, 2011
Spotted recently on the supermarket shelf was Glenleigh Noni Juice. Produced in the town of Highgate, St Mary, Glenleigh's juice is made from organically grown noni fruit, double filtered water and no additives save for guava purée and passion fruit juice.
Glenleigh director, Alfred Whittaker told Thursday Food, "Glenleigh Noni came into being as a result of the high prices for foreign noni sold in Jamaica. As soon as we learned that Morianda citrifola — the botanical name for noni — was the same thing we call 'duppy sour sop' and 'noni' here in Jamaica, we immediately began cultivating noni for local consumption."
Whittaker noted that the addition of passion fruit in the noni juice is an immediate health benefit. "Passion fruit juice contains serotonin, an important chemical that is also produced by the human body," he explained.
Glenleigh's Noni (in addition to a line of products including a hand and body lotion and bath soap) can be found at John R Wong Supermarket; Loshusan Supermarket; Ocho Rios Pharmacy; and Shoppers Fair, Mandeville branch.
