Thwaites rues downward trend in CXC passes

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Education Ronnie Thwaites is bemoaning what he describes as a disastrous downward lurch in the performance of Jamaican students in English A in the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams.

At a press conference at the Ministry of Education's head office Thwaites said that the results, published on the Caribbean Examination Council's website today reveals a downward spiral in the performance from 63.9 per cent last year to 46 per cent passes this year.

He added that there was also a marginal decrease in mathematics passes to 31.7 per cent from a little over 33 per cent.
