Vows - Port Of Love

Monday, January 09, 2012

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

— Proverbs 18:22

Jeremy Dixon, entrepreneur and Internet marketing consultant, wed Janene Effs, managing director of mobile marketing company Fresh From St Bess, on December 3, 2011 at Christ Church in Port Antonio, Portland.

After experiencing a number of failed relationships, Janene had almost given up, thinking that she would never find her true love. Little did she know that her soulmate had been right there in front of her for many years.

Jeremy and Janene had known each other since their high school years. "His brother Ron and I used to hang out a lot during high school and then during summer holidays while we were in university," Janene shared. She recalls going over to their house to visit Ron and on seeing Jeremy, she whispered to his brother, "I think he looks cute and I love his smile." The two would spend the next few years just being friends.

Five years ago, Jeremy showed up at a party where Janene was and approached her for a dance. "I had been attracted to Jeremy for years and as we danced, I remember my heart pounding and I got anxious," Janene told Vows. A few days after the party, Janene received an instant messages friend request from Jeremy, which she accepted. "We spoke for hours about random things until 4 o'clock the next morning. The next thing I knew, we were dating," she recalled.

"Jeremy is definitely a breath of fresh air," Janene said of her true love. "He truly knows how to treat a woman. I remember the first year of dating I would open my handbag at work and see little notes; getting lunch delivered at work when it became too stressful to even take a break; getting special deliveries like flowers, chocolates, opening the door to my room, only to see the inside full of helium balloons with love notes at the end of each balloon."

The next five years would see Jeremy and Janene becoming inseparable as they placed God at the head of their relationship.

On November 30, 2010, four years after their relationship began, Jeremy and Janene decided to take their union before God.

The two had always done something creative and adventurous when celebrating their anniversary. That year Jeremy decided to create a game in which Janene would be able to choose her own anniversary gift and location. "Throughout the day I presented her with multiple choices, and through a process of elimination she would have been able to choose the location for our anniversary celebration," Jeremy told Vows. "Janene eventually chose Portland for the location and the activities included rafting on the Rio Grande and going to Somerset Falls. She was extremely excited and had no idea that her life was about to change," Jeremy continued.

It was a bright and beautiful day. The couple went rafting and swimming in the Rio Grande and then went to Somerset Falls to have lunch and enjoy the waterfalls. Jeremy then mysteriously excused himself from lunch and while Janene waited, he ran to the car to retrieve two huge wrapped boxes. Like any woman, Janene's eyes lit up as she watched Jeremy walking towards her. "I told her she could only open one box and she did. The box she opened had a note that stated that she could go to Bijoux and choose any item of jewellery she liked. Janene was so excited she overlooked the fine print: a disclaimer that stated that if the answer to the question that I had asked was yes, then the gift is null and void," Jeremy shared. While Janene thought about what piece of jewellery she wanted, Jeremy instructed her to stand by the waterfall so he could set the timer on the camera to take a photo of them. While reading a second note that was in the box Janene did not realise that Jeremy was already on his knees. A confused Janene asked, "What are you doing?" Jeremy held her hand looked into her eyes, told her how much she meant to him and how much he loved her. "Will you be my wife?" Janene was shocked.

"All I can remember was hearing her scream 'What!' over and over with a big smile on her face and holding her stomach as if she was in pain," Jeremy told Vows. Eventually, Janene said yes.

A year of planning for the big day passed and Jeremy and Janene were ready to tie the knot

on December 3, 2011.

The couple went back to the parish where the proposal had taken place. They were married

at the Christ Church in Port Antonio, Portland.

Jeremy, looking debonair in a Carlton Brown suit, chatted with his groomsmen, and from time to time would emit nervous chuckles as he awaited his bride. Soon, there she was. Looking stunning in a David's Bridal gown that hugged her slender figure, Janene smiled at her groom, clutching her bouquet of wine-red roses. Escorted by her two older brothers, Romeo and Steve Effs, Janene made her way up the aisle to the tune of Franz Schubert's Ave Maria, to meet her groom.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today," Reverend Dr Marion Sutton began. After the traditional exchange of vows, the reverend pronounced them husband and wife.

The reception later took place at Norma's at the Marina at the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio. The couple had their first dance to Corinne Bailey Rae's Like a Star, but Janene admitted that it was Jeremy's dance routine (dedicated to her) that will forever replay in her mind. "I would always make fun of him in his attempt to dance to popular dancehall moves," Janene said. The bride, who had earlier done a rendition of No Doubt's Underneath it All with Cameal Davis, admitted she was surprised by her husband's newly acquired dancing skills. "There was an uproar when both our families and friends realised that he was actually moving so well and to the beat," she continued.

The newly-weds later jetted off to Costa Rica, Los Angeles and Las Vegas for their three week honeymoon.
