Do it yourself

This past Christmas, while trying to give inspired and unique gifts to my daughter's little friends and cousins, my mind started to race on all the possibilities. Personalised bags I'd already done; clothes, well, they all had enough; and with all the birthday parties and presents, comes everything in-between. Then I thought of doll beds... they all have dolls that they're constantly playing with, but incidentally, no beds for the little ones to rest. I came up with the idea of making them doll beds, dressed in beautiful linens for their little dolls to rest, which the girls can have great fun playing with. With the countless projects I'm always working on, finding fabrics for this one was not a problem, because I had several pieces that coordinated beautifully that could be used, and it was Polyflex to the rescue again.

So for this project you will need:

* A 1-ft X 2-ft piece of 4-inch thick foam (cost: $400)

* Coordinating/complementary fabrics of your choice

* Wadding/Batting to stuff pillow and to fill comforter

* Piping cord (optional)

* Sewing implements, scissors, etc

You will then:

1. Cut a 17-inch X 29-inch rectangle for sheet in your choice of fabric

2. Cut 4-inch strips for skirting in a complementary fabric to that chosen for sheet, two measuring 48 inches and two measuring 24 inches. And an additional strip measuring 40 inches in length for the ruffle on the pillow

3. Cut two rectangles for comforter (in two different fabrics if you're making yours reversible) measuring 18" X 28"

4. Cut two rectangles for pillows (in two different fabrics if you're making yours reversible) measuring 5" X 10"

5. Cut a 17 X 27 inch rectangle of batting that will be used to fill the comforter

6. Cover bed with rectangle sheet and fold and pin all four corners in order to make it fitted.

7. Stitch the four points and cut excess away

8. Loosely baste stitch and gather the 4-inch strips for skirting and join them once done

9. Attach frills to sheet and close at the corner

10. Layer the two fabrics for comforter, right sides facing in, with the layer of batting in- between, and stitch shut except for one end which you will leave open. Turn right side out, fold raw edges in and neatly stitch shut

11. Layer the two fabrics for the pillow, right sides facing in with the frilled trim pinned inside between the fabrics and stitch shut, except for one end which you will leave open. Turn right side out, stuff with batting until you get desired thickness and then fold raw edges in and neatly stitch shut

And Voila! Your doll bed is complete. Now your little one can enjoy bedtime and playtime fun with her doll. And her doll bed can be made to coordinate with her bedroom, especially if you did her bedroom yourself.
