Cocktails with - Natasha Manley

Style Observer

Sunday, January 29, 2012

We caught up over cocktails with Natasha Manley — daughter of the late Prime Minister, Michael Manley and celebrated broadcaster and novelist Beverley Anderson-Duncan — last Saturday at her mother's wedding to dentist and politician Donald Keith Duncan, on the lawns of Devon House. Manley who resides in London and is the head of culture for Red Bull UK, shared with us her hopes for the future.

What are you sipping today?

I am sipping an Argentinean Malbec. It's really good.

What kind of day are you having?

It is my mother's wedding day, so I am having an extraordinary day. I am so proud of her. I think she is setting a good example for all persons — especially the non-believers of love. She is saying that it is never too late to get married. She is truly happy and I am happy for her.

Socialite or homebody?

I am a very social person. I travel around the world all the time. I love new and novel things. I think this is a trait I got from my parents.

Flats or stilettos?

I prefer flats so that I can dance. What I love more than flats, though, is being barefoot. In fact I am going to go barefoot in five minutes (smiles).

Jeans or LBD?

Jeans.

In a sentence how would you describe yourself?

Oh my! What a difficult question (laughs). I would have to say that I am someone who is completely passionate about life!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Never lose your sense of humour. This is something I got from my grandmother Edna. I will never forget it and I try to stay true to this.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

I am really proud that I was able to create a life which allows me to travel all the time and meet lots of interesting people.

What would you like to accomplish this year?

I'd like to spend more time here in Jamaica on our coffee farm. I want to develop this as my new project.

What is your must-have accessory?

(laughs) Does it have to be clothing related? Well, my gold gypsy hoop earrings are a must-have for me. I love them! But if I were to be really honest I would say my hot water bottle. I live in England; it is really cold there! So that would be more of a must-have accessory if you ask me. (laughs)

When you are not working, where is the best place to find you?

Oh that's easy, on the beach somewhere. (smiles)

Who or what inspires you?

My grandmother inspires me. She was a strong, independent and creative woman. She is a true inspiration to every woman. She fought hard for what she wanted in life. I think she is an excellent role model.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

(laughs) I see myself right here in Jamaica, hopefully surrounded by my family and lots of children. I also want to be doing something worthwhile for the society.
